What Is an Internship?

The National Association of Colleges and Employers defines an internship as: A form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Therefore, an internship isan opportunity offered by a company to potential future employees (nowinterns), to work at its organization for a specified period of time. Interns are usually freshlydiploma/degree graduates or current students, and most internships last betweenthree month and six months. Internships are usually part-time if offered duringan academic semester/session and full-time if offered during the vacationperiods.

Advantages of Internship

An internship should give an intern practical skills, workplace experience and greater knowledge of that industry sector, in exchange for the employer benefiting from intern’s contribution to the company’s work. Internship is a way for students to obtain valuable real-world experience, gain specific field-related exposure and make important connections for the future. For employers, internships provide an opportunity to extend the interview process and evaluate the intern’s skills, work ethic and assimilation into the culture before incurring the expense of bringing them on full time. They help employers to build relationships with future potential young workforce to maintain a pipeline of skilled talent for future recruitment. Employers also give back to the community by providing interns a chance to learn new skills and obtain real-world experience, creating a qualified pool of candidates for the region. For students, internships provide an opportunity to see if a particular career path or field of study is right for them, sharpen their skills and apply their academic knowledge.

The Stages of an Internship

There are several stages of internship learning experience. Each stage has its own impediments and opportunities. There are issues interns will have at each stage, and to some extent, those issues must be resolved for them to move forward and continue learning and growing. The process of resolving the concerns is also a learning experience. At each stage, there are essential tasks that will help interns address the issues.

The advancement through the stages is affected by many factors. These factors include the number of hours spent at and with the company; previous field experiences; personality dynamics; the personal issues and levels of guidance provided; the approach of mentoring and the nature of the work. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable, applied experience and to make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths.

Stages:

What Do Interns Typically Do?

In general, the majority of interns will perform wide variety of support tasks. The specific duties and responsibilities of an intern will vary significantly depending on the company, the industry and the type of internship. Unlike conventional full-time employment, internship engagement focuses on training, rather than employment itself. By their very nature, internships are more of a support role than anything else.

But they are a great opportunity for you to learn how the business operates, even if you are only carrying out basic activities. Typical duties may include basic technical (IT/Software) works, programming, web-design, processing information, data entry, sorting through documents, writing, and business tasks or scheduling appointments. That’s not a given though: some interns are given greater responsibilities and can end up becoming a key member of the team, making significant contributions to the company.

What Experience Will You Need?

Although employers will not expect you to have previous work experience, they will look at the skills that you have obtained via your studies. So, what should you mention if you don’t have regular work experience? Here are some thoughts:

  • Volunteering is an excellent way to build your experience. Don’t think about the work being unpaid; think of it as a means to an end and an effective way to develop your skills and build your network.
  • There are lots of part-time jobs that you can do in between your studies. Don’t worry too much about the type of job that you get at this stage; it is the experience and transferable skills that the internship recruiter will be looking for.
  • By joining student groups such as business clubs, associations or community groups, you can develop skills that employers look for.
How Do I Apply for Internships?

The application process for an internship can be rigorous and detailed, since competition is often high, particularly in technology, service and retail industries.

Start your internship search at least six months in advance. Companies will run recruitment drives at certain times throughout the year, so know when the recruitment campaigns for internships of companies you are interested in begin.

The requirements for applicants will vary depending on the company. Some companies will require you to complete an online application, while others will ask paper application.

There are two ways that you can apply for an internship. You can either check advertisements, or you can send out speculative applications to companies of interest. In either of these situations you should compose a strong application that:

  • Clearly demonstrates your knowledge, skills and motivation relevant to the internship
  • States what you can bring to the company
  • Highlights why you are interested in the company
  • Demonstrates the key capabilities that the company is looking for in an intern

Internships are an excellent addition to your CV and in an increasingly competitive jobs market place; they really can set you apart from other candidates.

You have the opportunity to evaluate and screen potential employees prior to making a full‐time position offer, which leads to financial savings. Employers have reported converting more than half of eligible interns into full‐time hires. If hired in a permanent position, previous interns assimilate faster to their new roles and have shorter learning curves than external hires.

Furthermore, Internships help Companies:
  • Gain access to an expanded pool of qualified applicants.
  • Invest early to get hard-to-find people “trained your way”.
  • Reduce employee training costs.
  • See future employees in action before hiring them, and hire those who fit your company culture and expectations.
  • Introduce students to their business and careers available within your company.
  • Develop new projects with student assistance.
  • Be seen as an active and caring part of the community.
  • Generate positive publicity and public relations for their company.
  • Build morale among employees by giving them something positive in which to participate.

Mentors

We invite professionals, technologists, and entrepreneurs to be mentors to our internship programme. This will be an opportunity for giving forward. A mentoring relationship can be very worthwhile for both the intern and the mentor.

Mentorships contribute to intern’s motivation and performance and enable interns to acclimate more quickly to the organizational culture. The connections created through this type of interaction will benefit the employer in the long term.

‍Mentors serve as:
  1. Teachers
    • Help intern learn about the business and its offerings
    • Explain projects and processes
    • Help train, correct or redirect inappropriate actions
  2. Supporters
    • Help make the transition to the workplace as easy as possible
    • Answer questions and concerns
    • Serve as a positive role model
  3. Evaluators
    • Provide constructive feedback to the intern on a regular basis
